Flaget tages mere alvorligt i Danmark end i Tyskland. Mens

over generationer.

på tværs over grænserne burde man altså absolut regne med to forskellige slags
kartoffelsalater, som begge to har deres charme. Ligeledes kan man også regne
med overraskelser i ølglasset. Da jeg holdt mit første fest i Danmark, bragte

I Danmark flygter man

I år var „You let me walk alone“ dog mindst ligeså relevant for danskere som Rasmussens bidrag.

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.75); font-family: "source serif pro", serif; font-size: 20px; line-height: 3.2rem; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.75); font-family: "source serif pro", serif; font-size: 20px; line-height: 3.2rem; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.75); font-family: "source serif pro", serif; font-size: 20px; line-height: 3.2rem; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.75); font-family: "source serif pro", serif; font-size: 20px; line-height: 3.2rem; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.75); font-family: "source serif pro", serif; font-size: 20px; line-height: 3.2rem; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.75); font-family: "source serif pro", serif; font-size: 20px; line-height: 3.2rem; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

Tyskere elsker
orden.
behov for.

uden at købe noget.

foretrækker Føtex, skyldes simpelthen at butikken ligner tyske supermarkeder
ret meget.

Man orker derfor

Skattejagt vs. Udvalg

I Danmark spises

Today I'll use this blog in order to talk about a topic that's not so nice. However, it's easier to deal with difficult things when saying them out loud, rather than trying to hide them.

In the last couple of months I've had plenty of time to think about my life and myself as a person. Meanwhile, it occurred to me that I've changed a lot in the last 30 (yeah, really) years.

I was a very curious, cheerful and talkative child, would ask hundreds of question each day and would talk as much as ten people would in the same time. I'd try to be in the center of attention and if I wasn't, I'd make sure to push myself through the crowd and let them all know that I was there as well. I've never wondered about if the things that came out of my mouth would be wrong in any way.

Today, it's much harder not to recognize me, but I wish that I wasn't as noticeable as I am.What i've learned in the last 30 years is that you absolutely should fit in the scheme and shouldn't try to stick out. And while you're supposed to be quiet, sit in your chair and follow your teachers instructions as a student, you're supposed to be the exact opposite of that as a grown-up. You're supposed to be able to engage in small-talk, to network, to hold presentations and to be likeable.

So now, I'm not doing it right all over again. I don't interrupt people when they talk and reconsider what I want to say until it's too late to say it. I would rather not be caught saying something stupid or wrong. And I have far from enough contacts, which are so vital for my job aspiration. But it's really difficult for me to not let a conversation die out, because I can't talk the way I used to talk, unaware of possible repercussions and 100% honest.

However, I am sure that I'd be a good friend, even though or maybe even because I am a very good listener and I'd be a valueable employee, because I do my job the way it's supposed to be done and fast as well (and creative, detail- and goal-oriented). But I'm no longer able to stand in the limelight, because I have always been told that it is wrong. And I can't be proud of myself, because everything I was has always been wrong and because I didn't fit in the scheme of the much preferred silent and obeying student.

If there is one thing that school has taught me, then that it is an advantage not to ask too many questions and to do as you are told. And if there is one thing life has taught me, then that you shouldn't be yourself for as long as you are unable to shine as a flawless and successful human being.

I'm not advocating that we should never think about what exactly it is that we are saying, but sometimes we're just supposed to say something without thinking it all through for too long. If we don't do that, it'll often be too late to say it. Also, it would often be better if we had the possibility to just state the truth, even if it hurts. Instead of that, we swallow it all down and act out a role as perfect humans.

I may not be the worst actor there is, but I don't enjoy acting out my own life. If you find me at the gym, I'm in a role as somebody who enjoys this, even though I really don't. While trying to find a job, I have to stay in character, even though I really am somebody else. I really feel no pleasure in trying to cover up all my flaws and in covering up those horrible parts that are a part of my life and therefore, a part of me. But this is exactly what I have to do, if I want to find a job.

Nobody, absolutely nobody will write about their extensive experiences with therapy, their psychologic diseases, the fact that they've been a victim of a horrible crime or simply that they've been bullied throughout their time in school in their CV or their cover letter, even though some of these things would easily explain why there are holes in the CV or why some of the candidate's grades aren't the best. The fact that all these perceived flaws have to be covered up is often the first step into a web of lies.

I've never been particularly good at lying, but I have to lie while trying to get a job. I'll have to be a person I'm not, or not anymore, even though I wish that we'd all be able to accept that none of us are completely flawless.

The person who may look flawless based on their grade papers and the first impression can be the person who wont do a good job. If your grades are all A+, you might not have had enough chances to socialize. If your grade paper is at best showing a mediocre performance in school, this might indicate that you, in fact, are rather good at socializing, but didn't have enough time to focus on all subjects, and if your grades show that you performed poorly, this may simply indicate that life dealt you lemons from day one.

In other words, grade papers and job interviews that may last between 30 and 60 minutes are not an indicator of your ability as an employee. They may be an indicator of the fact that your day had already started either good or bad though, but that is all there is to it.

It would make a lot more sense to test possible employees and let them work in your business to figure out whether or not they'll fit in. Whenever I got the chance to do exactly that, I usually figured out that I actually am a valueable employee, contrary to my own beliefs and contrary to my mediocre grade papers.

This way, I also found out that I am too much of a perfectionist and that I simply don't engage enough in small talk. I'll have to work on this and I know that it wont be easy to return to my old self, but it is necessary, if I want to live a more or less normal life. Sure, I'll risk that some people will no longer like me, but I guess that is the price I'll have to pay to be true to myself. I can't please everyone.

Liebe ist, was zählt.

I'm getting married in about a week. I haven't really thought anything through yet and I really don't know what's going to change. As far as I am aware, not even my name changes. It is too complicated to do it now and will be much easier later on. Even if you are planning to have a very laidback and small wedding, there are many things that need to be thought through and considered.

Our plan for the ceremony looks a bit like a game plan in football. The bride's father is the first to play the ball, but ends up on the substitute's bench. The new player will be the groom. Once there is a ring on the finger, the groom has won. You can expect a laola while the couple is kissing.

But all joking aside, I've been watching a myriad of romcoms lately, and it all comes down to the fact that the most important thing about weddings and a relationship is that the couple loves one another, no matter what. Expensive cars, travelling to exotic places, having a house or whathever the world let's you know you are supposed to do or to have - all of that doesn't matter, as long as you are in love. You can look at social media and doubt it. But love includes days on which you really don't like your partner, on which you fight and on which you don't agree. These are the things, people don't like to show, but they are there nevertheless. And everyone experiences this.

We are at a point in our life, where everything is going wrong. We have no jobs, we don't have that house that you apparently are supposed to have when you're getting married in Denmark, we don't even have a car and we don't have a child - other people would claim this is a low. But we have eachother, we are healthy and we have love.

This love is more important than the biggest wedding, the most expensive things and that everything goes right in life. This is essential, but often something that we tend to forget, when we see that everybody seems to lead a better life than we do (on social media). I believe it is important to not forget the essential parts of life that make it worth living. The essential part of life is that you can live it on this planet, with people you love, who help you to learn more about life and who are with you, while you enjoy your time here.

Love is, what is important.

It's early in the afternoon. I'm slowly getting up. I'm trying to talk myself into looking out of the window. I'm thinking: "Why am I even doing this?" This is how a typical day in the life on an unemloyed person starts and it takes place between a bed and a couch. Even if you are the most enthusiastic person there is in this world, the evil monster of unemployment is going to eat you alive one day.

The jobcenter keeps telling you that "it'll all be fine" and that "all it takes" is an internship and a job with some extra money by the jocenter thereafter. If you are lucky, that is. Eventually, you are one of those, who end up disappearing from the statistics after two years of unemployment.

I don't want to paint the devil on the wall, but it is really difficult to hold your head up high, if all you meet is people who have a lack of understanding of your situation. "But everybody says that there is a lack of engineers!" While that may be true, it is also true that those who recently graduated lack the 5-10 years of experience which they demand for almost all jobs (okay, it is more like 2-5, but exaggeration helps to show how ridiculous this is). "It's your own fault, you are not willing to move to the countryside and want to stay in a big city." There are no jobs for software engineers in the coutnryside. I'm not even going to mention my situation as a humanist, but this describes the accusations my boyfriend has to live with. "If only you would have wanted to become something more proper than a humanist" is ringing in my ears ever since before i even started studying.

When you are unemployed, they still expect a lot from you. The days between bed and couch are filled with applications. If i would have luck everytime that somebody wished me "Good luck" with my job search, I should have won the lottery 5 times by now. Or, I should at least have had a jobinterview. Many people believe that all we (the unemployed) do is to sit at home, having a good time, because we can't show them how tedious and difficult it is to go through all of this and to not lose your mind along the way. On top of that, you're going from workshop to workshop in hopes of finding a "better you". Most of the times, you'll briefly feel like it's your turn now - only to return to your couch again later. But why is that the case?

The young generation (mine) is facing many obstacles in their lives. A demanding economy makes sure that people need to work longer and longer, in an order to minimize the costs of a constantly aging populace. While focussing on that, politicians generally oversee that the younger generations are experiencing more difficulties when trying to join the work force. Depression and a constant fear of not being able to make it define a young generation, which thus can end up without the slightest spark or power left to even be able to join the work force. This is how you make sure that potential workers will never become those. In other words: The money that you thought you'd save on pension spendings will directly go to those, who will no longer be able to become part of the work force. I would be willing to say that this is not how you save money, but this is how you lose in the long run.

On top of that, it becomes very unlikely that people with no job will choose to have children. If you want your populace to stop declining, you need to give them favorable circumstances instead of trying to make their life harder. But politicians aren't generally known to be those who think ahead of their 4-5 years in the parliament. If somebody would have thought ahead during the Bologna process, they could have figured out that the job market needs a longer phase in order to be able to adapt to the students, which seemingly "don't know what they are doing and have no experience". If your Bachelor is not enough and companies require a Master, it can at times seem a little off, because if you, like me, have experieced that a Master just means two more years of basically the same thing with the only exception being the finals which, admittedly, are tougher, then you begin to think that companies really have no idea what the studies are all about and that they just want you to have a prestigious title. And then there is the age issue which does not get better by studying two years longer. At 26-30, women are at their best age to have children which makes them rather unattractive for the job market as well. So no matter how you do it, you are bound to do it wrong. The older generations are done with children and have the necessary experience, which makes them more attractive than you in every respect.

But if you show a couple of glamorous pictures on the jobcenter homepage, then everybody is going to believe that they will find a job in relatively little time. This is why we are desperately trying to create the world's best CV and cover letter which is so "new" and "creative", in order to blow the employer's mind and why we are writing exciting recounts of us as THE best employee ever, for all of that to end up in the paper bin, time and time again. Because we are not the perfect super candidate the company is looking for and thus, they act like there wouldn't be any suitable candidates at all.

Somebody in my last job class suggested that we should have more time for mindfulness. I, for my part, are satisfied with the free coffee that saves me from wasting the money that I, in the eyes of many, are not even supposed to get for being such a lazy bugger, on a Starbucks coffee that I couldn't even afford anyway.

Money also makes sure that they can bash us for another reason, namely, that we are not trying to get that one job at the end of the world that's waiting for us. It is because most of us don't even have a car and it gets really difficult to drive four hours every day, while you are, for example, supposed to pick up your child from the Kindergarten while having a 9-5 job. Unless you want to borrow a lot of money from your parents, it will take a while until you have the funds to buy that car. This is why these jobs, if they even were there, would be more or less unattractive.

At least most of us here do not live with our parents any longer. In Japan, this is the exact opposite. A recent article on "asienspiegel.ch" stated that as much as 4,5 million japanese people from 35-54 live with their parents and are called "parasite-singles". This term includes that the general population believes that these people are simply too lazy to make do themselves and negates the fact that more and more jobs don't offer enough payment to make do, or that it gets more and more difficult to even find a fitting position. If we don't pay attention, Japan could be a look into our future, and yes, this would include that we also are facing even fewer newborns in the future. But politicians are only willing to point at our direction while they, at the same time, have at least three fingers that point towards them. They are not trying to figure out what the reason for the problems is, they are only interested in trying to find someone to blame for the misery.

The older generations often asks us: "Why don't the youngsters protest?" And the younger generations will have to answer that they are too tired and have learned nothing else than blind obedience from day one. However, the older generations are not going to believe that, because they know that we are at fault, because we simply are too lazy. So it should be the older generations that should protest, because they have to work longer, but all you hear from them is that it is fine and that they would have been bored at home anyway, or they don't complain, because all is fine as long as you have the money, albeit not realizing that they would benefit from not making sure that we will have to rely on them for a lot longer than they had expected when they gave birth to us. This way, they also give us a chance to make the grandchildren they keep asking for, while not realizing that we would rather not have children, when we have nothing to offer and can't give them a somewhat secure life.

So I'll put on my "business-casual" suit, go to the next meeting, get my hopes up just to end up on my loser couch again. But at least I can call this couch my own. In Japan, I'd be sitting on mommy's and daddy's couch.

Niemand sagt gern wiederholt: "Was haben Sie gesagt?"

As some of you may know, my boyfriend and I are both looking for a job. Here in Denmark, you are expected to accept jobs which can be located up to two hours away from your home. In two hours, I'm able to travel to the North Sea, but I live next to the Baltic Sea. I could also make it to the German-Danish border, so you get an idea of the size of the area this includes.

Admittedly, it would probably be easier for me to get a job closer to the westcoast than here. Aarhus is a city and the places on the westcoast are mostly not even close to a cities' size, but the area is more tourist oriented and in particular often frequented by Germans. Thus, the fact that I speak German is a definite plus over there.

I have a Master's degree in English and i am trying to get a job in the PR/communication sector. This is the area of work I am most familiar with as I have worked in a PR agency back in Germany. My boyfriend is a Software Engineer. He has had job interviews while I am usually getting the standard "no". At the moment, I am participating in a career coaching class. I don't know if it's going to help me, but it's a class that I have to visit as it's demanded by the job center. If you want to receive "Dagpenge" - unemployment support - you are supposed to visit classes hosted by the job center and the agency that pays your Dagpenge, called "A-Kasse". You will also have to write a couple of applications per week and stay in contact to your A-Kasse/Jobcenter by going there once a month.

It's not an issue at all, but I'm expecting that the job search could eventually become more and more difficult on an emotional level while time flies by. Frederik and I are in group 1 and 2 of those students in Denmark who take the longest to find their first job (as seen in the newspaper "Politiken"). We have up to two years to find a job, after that, we'll be paid a lot less (Kontanthjælp). So there will be more and more pressure on us and there'll definitely be more potential for conflict. The fact that we see each other pretty much 24/7 does not help this either. However, one should never give up hope.

In Denmark, they'll always let you know that the best way to find a job is through the telephone. I find this a bit impractical for my generation as we are used to other methods. Don't get me wrong, the phone is not the enemy, but it makes it more difficult to get a clue about what the other person is thinking, feeling, in general, how the other person reacts to the things you are saying. That can be particularly difficult in the job search situation and it can cause misunderstandings. I've had a phone call with a potential employer and it was okay, but awkward at the same time. On top of that, calling a Dane can be a challenge for me, as I have no chance of knowing whether or not the person speaks some awkward dialect or if it will be difficult for me to understand the person for other reasons. And nobody likes to ask if the other person could repeat what he/she has said again and again. However, this is one of the reasons why it is essential for you as a foreigner to actually learn and practice the language as much as possible. You can always make mistakes but practice makes perfect!

Generally, if you want a job, you'll have to go beyond your comfort zone a few times. I am having a hard time talking to others and trying to find friends in general. However, if you want to have better chances of getting a job, you need a bigger network, which is why you need to be in contact with many people. Getting a job is like trying to sell yourself on a market on which you'll only be "bought" if you are visible. I'm going to try and see which of these tips I can use myself and will keep you up to date on progress that I make. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to write them down in the comment section below. I'll try to answer any questions according to my knowledge.

So weit, so gut.

---

When you are preparing everything for your wedding, you will most likely notice just how many traditions are involved in the ceremony. These traditions are different in each country and being only 4 hours away from home (Hamburg) is enough for a whole different set of traditions.

In Germany, you can choose to get married in church, but you can only "officially" get married in a registry office, which you will do in advance. In Denmark, it's either the one or the other, not both. Once you know where you want to be married and this can be more challenging in Denmark, because you need to have some sort of "connection" to the church you want to be married in, like for example a sibling who has been baptized in the same church, the rest is pretty similar. The husband to be is not allowed to see his bride in the last night before the wedding, he must not see her dress, he is supposed to buy the bridal bouquet, etc. etc. Both countries take over new things from the US, such as bridal showers, but then, we'll come to the more interesting part:

A bit ahead of the wedding, Danes will have their "Polterabend", which is a German word for an evening before the wedding, were we are having a party with our soon to be guests and were we throw porcelain on the floor for good luck. But in Denmark, the "Polterabend" is the hen/stag night, which is called "Junggesellen/Junggesellinnenabschied" in German. I know, I find it super confusing as well.

And then soon, the bride will make her way down the aisle in her pretty white dress for the first time in her......wait, what? It's not the first time in the life of a Danish girl, walking down the aisle in a white dress. For their confirmation, Danish girls become "mini-brides", while it's tradition to be dressed in black in Germany. The wedding ceremony in itself does not differ significantly from the ceremony in a - lutheran - German church, but it's possible that your Danish pastor may be a bit more conservative and will not allow you to kiss and will not allow any kind of camera during the service. Let's see how that will turn out for us.

Once the ceremony is over, you'll be on your way to the party. You can expect the usual wedding cake, gift table, drinks, good food, but don't expect your German "wedding soup" to show up. Your dinner may be interrupted by funny games and little plays by your best friends in Germany, but in Denmark, your family will make sure to write some songs for you and about you as a couple that you all will have to sing together.

Then you'll move on to the dance floor, but what's that old song they are playing? It can't be the favorite song of the bride and groom can it? No, it's the "brudevalsen" a traditional opening song even the royals dance to. Here you can see Crown Prince Frederik and his Mary dancing to the song:

Rumor has it that every Danish couple MUST dance to this with no exception.

If the music should be too loud and the bride or groom is in dire need of some peace and quiet, they may want to retreat to the restrooms for a bit. However, once one of them walks out and leaves the other one behind, this is THE chance for all guests from the other gender - you may now kiss the bride/groom! Rumor has it that some guests may change their gender in a matter of seconds in order to place a smooch on the unsuspecting groom's forehead.

The music you are listening to will most likely be played by a band, however, there are more and more DJ's to be found at Danish weddings. But I can tell you that your feet will be equally tired regardless of if you attend a Danish or a German wedding! I've tried that out for you earlier ;-)

Viele Bräute basteln in letzter Zeit selbst.

The time has come. Frederik and I are finally getting married. We are getting married on the 22.7. in a little church by the Baltic Sea and the celebrations will also take place by the Baltic Sea, but in a hotel. We didn't choose a theme or specific colors yet, but some elements will reoccur throughout the day. By now, i am only done with picking my dress, and we have a location and the invitations are done.

The invitations are very beautiful and have been designed by graphic designer I know. He will also help me with other surprises (that I'll write about later so as to not spoil the surprise to any of the guests). We did save up for the wedding (I have been saving up for it in forever by now), but will still try to keep the costs down, as we both are recent graduates, who are not yet employed by anyone. This is one of the reasons, why I believe that some tips and tricks from a bride to be might be important for other future brides. Therefore, I'd like to share some of the best tips and tricks I can come up with:

You lack money in order to buy a very large cake? There is not enough money for all the bits and pieces that other brides have chosen for their wedding? Ask your network! You'll be amazed just how many people you know that are able to help with things such as choosing a location, baking a cake or designing decorations and invitations together with you. It is fun to work together and you can also promote some of your friend's and families' work to others that may be at the wedding. It's also great fun to be able to see this as some sort of a group project.

Bridal Dress Outlets - unless you have that one special dress that you have always dreamed of, this is a good way to save large amounts of money. My bridal dress did not even cost half of its original price, yet it is still amazing. And nobody will be able to tell which season the dress was made for anyway.

Make your own invitations and decorations! As previously mentioned, this is a way to save money and many brides engage in creating beautiful pieces of art for their wedding that will give the celebrations the perfect personal touch. Since I have two left hands when it comes to crafts, I didn't choose to do anything myself though.

Don't let "experts" tell you what a "must-have" is. Really, nothing is a must-have, unless you really want it. Weddings have a whole industry wrapped around them, like most other things in life. People are trying to make money and not everyone will tell you the truth. Some photographers, just an example, will pressure you into thinking that your pictures wont be worth it, if they aren't professional. That is not entirely true, especially not if you lack the money, but have connections to people with digital cameras and/or graphic designers, who know a thing or two about working with photographs. This is a legitimate way to save money, no matter what "experts" are trying to tell you. Spend your money on what it is important to you as a couple

It's very possible to save money with respect to the location. The rule of thumb here: the more you do yourself, the cheaper it gets. However, this was not an option for us, as we are not willing to spend our day worrying about if everything works out the way it should, thus, we opted for a tailored offer, but for a relatively unexpensive one. Check different locations and see if you can get a discount. Don't be afraid to ask, most people are very reasonable, they need you as a customer.

And last but not least, my best tip: Enjoy the day! Let people help you, but don't let anyone tell you what to do. It is your special day after all!

For the future, I hope that I will be able to post a bit more. The last two years have been rather exhausting from a personal perspective.

To be German - what does that mean? As an immigrant, your nationality will logically be a bit more in the focus than it ever has been before, because it conveys a bit about who you are. Yes, I'll start to be a bit impatient, if my bus happens to be late, I'm usually showing up just in time to meetings- and that's enough to be able to guess that I am German. And when I work, I am concentrated and have a keen eye for detail.

I have a secret recipe for potato salad that my mum passed on to me and dislike Bratwurst that cannot live up to my expectations - I would prefer a German Bratwurst to any other Bratwurst, no matter where it is from. I cheer for our Football nationalteam and like German cars (especially Mercedes). It is not difficult to be proud of the nation of poets and philosophers. I will happily let you know about my opinion on anything and I speak German (of course) - but the profile I just described probably fits to any random German or even Not-German.

Others describe me being typically German as "funny" (because it is funny, how I complain about the bus that's not coming, when I don't even have to be anywhere specific at a specific time). I do believe though, that we enjoy to explore each others differences and that we like to learn more about each others native country. As hard as one might try, you will never fully let go of something that will connect you to your former home.

At the moment though, I am ashamed of my home country. Not that I haven't been ashamed of being German before - from the moment you hear about the second World War and what happened during that time for the first time, you, as a German, develope a sense of guilt and shame. And everytime somebody mentions the war, it will feel rather uncomfortable, because you are fully aware of how many people were killed and that you, indirectly, are a part of this dark part of history.

Now, a bit more than two years after I left Germany, all I read about my home country is that some people have set refugee homes on fire and smeared Swastikas on them. On top of that, about 15.000 people are demonstrating for "PeGiDa" and "HoGeSa" and God knows what. In the beginning, I didn't even know where these movements came from, let alone what their message was, but after reading a bit about them, I became concerned about the way things are developing in my country.

PeGiDa wishes for no more radical islamists in Germany (well, who really wants them to be part of their country? But it isn't that easy. There is surveillance and those groups and their members are known to the authorities - so there really isn't a reason to be worried). Also, Pegida complains about the progression of "Islamisation". The progression of Islamisation? I don't even know what they are talking about. I mean, is everybody reading in the Quran, can you only get Halal meat and do I need to wear a burqa? I don't think so. Even if this seems a little exaggerated - in Islam, you will find these things, but you don't see them a lot in Germany unless you look pretty hard for them. In Hamburg, I've seen a woman in a burqa once - in my entire life! The fears that people have are unfounded, if not ridiculous - but this is the core of the problem.

The fears are not taken serious, because they aren't in sync with reality and there's no base to start from - but people in Saxony demonstrate for the cause of PeGiDa, and even though there are only 0,1% muslims in their state, they seem to be scared of "Islamisation". And because of this fear, there are enough people to be found that will just follow along and demonstrate, whilst stepping into a trap laid out by rightwing groups that use those demonstrations as a platform, in order to get their ideas to become more socially acceptable.

On top of all that, PeGiDa claims that refugees in Germany have a good life and that they get everything they ask for, while our elderly barely have enough to eat. This is not true. A study has proven that foreigners have higher social contributions than benefits. Not to mention all the hardship refugees have to go through, all the hopes and fears, the many questions and a lot of work... and all of that in shelters, in which some of them even have been abused..

I only mentioned a couple of "worries" that PeGiDa addresses. There are other demands, basically about harsher refugee laws that, as they claim, would prevent that refugees experience hardship. That sounds hypocritical. But as previously mentioned, a lot of people follow those groups that demand these things, basically out of fear and it makes you wonder, if they have ever wondered about what's really being said. Probably not. Because who's afraid, usually has a prefabricated opinion of something, he/she does not really know a lot about - and that opinion here is: "Oh, but muslims are all like ISIS."

It is more than obvious that this is wrong. But not everybody is aware of that. And this is why we need to enlighten people about the topic, so that every religion can coexist with the others and that people can live in peace. Democracy needs to make sure that its own virtues are protected and religious freedom needs to be defended. Only then, we will be able to diminish fear, because fear creates hate and hate creats war and war creates death. History should not repeat itself. Nip it in the bud!

Because I don't want to be ashamed of my country anymore. I want my punctuality, good football, great Bratwurst and so on to be addressed in talks with me, and I'd rather not talk about the hardship of others, for which my country would be responsible. I want Germany to keep being a democracy in which everyone can find a home - so that everybody can explore the feeling of sharing a part of their home with other people in the world.

What does it mean to live in an international community?

I've been thinking about that for quite a while, especially since we are now dealing with several wars, difficult world politics and general questions about if we need globalisation or not. I've also thought about that since my circle of friends has become more and more international. My friends come from Poland to Bermuda, Lithuania to Romania, from the Netherlands to the Philippines. In the last two years, I've got to meet a lot of interesting people with their very own stories - all united by being from other countries whilst being inherently different from one another.

When a harmless "kaffeeklatsch" turns into a political debate - that happened at our table more than once. Many times, we'll be discussing Russia, sometimes Romania and of course, we also talk about Germany. Politics are important for every one of us, there is not a single one who doesn't care about what's going on in the world. But we still met here in Denmark and formed a group, regardless of all differences, and we still have obstacles in each of our paths that we need to overcome. But those obstacles are quite alike. Because all of us have to learn the same language in order to settle down, get a job and most important of all, to become a member of society. Some are able to learn the language in no time, some need a little longer. Denmark helps us though, we don't have to pay for our language education.

But sometimes we wonder whether Denmark likes us or not. Denmark is ahead of time in many respects, but not when it comes to globalization. Yes, we will employ foreigners, but only those with the best grades and the most interesting CV. If we employ some other foreigner, then that's because we haven't heard of any fitting family members of our employees (that is a case, where the grades and the CV don't really matter). It sounds harsh, but unfortunately, it is a truth that is closer to reality than one would wish for. But don't we recognize a similar system at home? Yes, we do. If your name sounds foreign, you will most likely not be considered for a job interview in Germany. But of course this is the wrong technique, since every single applicant could be a valuable one.

This is why almost every foreigner in another country will at one point find him/herself asking that one question: "Was it the right decision to come here?" But there is always a reason as to why we have moved to another country. Be it love, education, the passion for adventure, or the aforementioned career. And as long as you are sure about that reason being the right reason, you've done everything right. In life, you'll always just have one or two areas at the same time in which you will be lucky and happy, you can't be lucky in all aspects all the time. As an immigrant, you should always be aware of the fact that you are leaving your security net- home - and trade it for a personal goal. It's brave, for many of us it's even a little too risky.

But I am sure that it would be better for our world, if all of us would let go of their security just a little. This way, we would have the opportunity to create a security net for all of us and our home would be called "earth". This way, we wouldn't have to deal so much with competition, we could go to the place where they need us the most and we could live with the people who love us. This way, what used to be a major obstacle, could be changed into mere stolpersteins on our path to a satisfying life.

People come and people go in life. Sometimes for an indefinite amount of time, sometimes forever.

And even if one wants them to be there forever - fate can't be changed.

My grandpa isn't with us anymore. I'm telling myself that he's with grandma. If it's like that, then he for sure is happy now. The two really loved one another. They've been married for over 60 years. Of course, this is pretty personal, but sometimes it helps to write a few lines. Especially, if the story behind it is such a great story like this one.

My grandparents met when they both were on a vacation. When looking through their old photo albums, I saw an attractive young man and a Hamburgian lady with style, who apparently immediately caught the eye of my grandpa. From this vacation on, they didn't stop writing love letters, because my grandpa was a soldier like so many others around this time and thus, they could not see eachother very often.

Those love letters still exist (at least my grandpas). However, they have been written in a fond that was called "Sütterlin"- it's difficult to read. But the most important topic in them is always the same - Love.

And those letters even led to their marriage. My grandma was supposed to leave her house - unmarried as she was - so the only way to stay was to get married. And grandpa didn't hesitate. But around this time, my grandpa was stationed in the fields of Russia. So they got married each for their own. My grandpa married a steel helmet - my grandma got some extra coupons for food. That this would turn into over 60 years of marriage - it makes me wonder, if they even dared to dream that dream?

Times were difficult, but somehow my grandparents managed to survive this war. Pictures show that even though there was war, people didn't give up hope, but instead that there also have been happy times outside in the sun and that it was possible to fall in love. Pictures show and tell a story - even if you can't see the bad times.

My grandpa took the bad times to his grave.

I got told a love story while looking through their photo albums, which was based on being there for one another, to respect and love eachother and to be together for better or worse. And that's what counts.

This is how I want to keep my grandpa in my memory. As the man on the pictures, who's always been happy, friendly and full of love.

Europa, Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten - Moment.... Stop, das war falsch. Leider.

-

Europe, land of unlimited opportunities - wait a minute.... stop, that was wrong. Unfortunately. Because technically, we should work together.
At least that should be the European spirit.

It is possible to change the place where you live within the borders of Europe, but not without trouble. One has to obtain translations that will easily give one disadvantages in the field of education and the like, because European countries happen to think of themselves or their direct neighbors as the best (Scandinavians are the better foreigners - if you follow the Danish perception of who is the best, they come first, then the other Scandinavians followed by West-Europeans and the worst would be East-Europeans).

At first one may think:"But we are all the same?", and "Oh, it wont be a problem." But that does not resemble reality. It is every man for himself.

That is why it is important that we have tv-shows such as the Eurovision Songcontest. And it should not be the right place for political displays. In a contrary to that, this is the place to show that we, as Europe, are a continent which is open to anybody and that likes to help. And we should celebrate that - with good reason - once a year with some loud music.

On the same note it is important that everyone cast their vote in the European Elections (25.5.) and say "Yes" to Europe. And leave aside that Europe at times can be expensive. Because we are not ruining ourselves by being a unified continent. Instead of that, we are trying to maintain a good standard for everybody. Problems are everywhere. But if we can get rid of some of them rather than none of them, we are on the right track.

Because freedom, charity and international understanding are more important than money. It is important to be able to feel home anywhere you go. Furthermore, it is important that nobody should suffer and that war should not even be an option. And Europe can serve as a good example. For today and for the future.

Today I wanna tell you a little bit about how Frederik and I met and how our friendship developed into "Rødgrød med Kærlighed" = a sweet fruit dish with love.

As banal as it sounds, Frederik and I met on the internet, like a lot of other couples nowadays. However, it was neither his, nor my intention to find the one.

It was mere coincidence that we, on the same day, at the same time, for the same reason (boredom) decided to visit the internetpage "Omegle" that our friends had suggested previously (in my case, it was due to Sandra and I'll always be grateful for that! ) and as luck would have it, we were assigned to eachother as "Stranger 1+2" and felt sympathy in the blink of an eye.

The technical-magical miracle though, was that you're only entitled to meet people on Omegle one time, as there's thousands of possible chat partners that will randomly be assigned to one another. With both of our internet connections being unstable at the time, it was pure luck that we had enough time to share contact addresses with one another.

However, I think it was fate that brought us together and made us fall in love after four month of friendship. Writing to each other every day let us feel close to one another, even though it wasn't physical by then.

It's been almost four years since we physically met for the first time and the expectations and also the fears were huge, but it took only one long walk in the fields of my home village at that time, to figure out that we fit together. And this is how our long distance relationship began that lasted 3 years and was assisted by DSB and Deutsche Bahn and included language barriers and their overcoming; but now we're finally where we want to be.

We live together and I've managed how to pronounce "Rødgrød med fløde" correctly. And all of this happened for one reason: Love = Kærlighed.

-

In Denmark, people like to take their shoes off - when you visit them, it is of utterly importance that you get rid of them at your hosts entrance. Admittedly, it's a very comfortable habit and makes sure that the dirt you just got on your shoes while working in the garden will not end up in your friends house. On a bad note, this custom leads Danes to believe it's a good idea to do the same in a train - especially, if that one is rather packed.

Is this appropriate? Whether it happens on a train, plane or anywhere else - my opinion is that one should only take his or her shoes off, if one is a 100% sure of their feet not being competition for Danish cave cheese. But that's exactly what you'd usually deal with when somebody takes their shoes off. On top of that, the reason to take the shoes off on a trainride is usually somehow related to putting your feet up on the seats in front of you. Here, you could of course say: Atleast they had the grace not to wipe the dirt off in the cushions. But that is mere damage limitation.

Furthermore, there should exist a list of Do's and Don't's in respect to food. Hint: Eggs and cheese bread with beer is probably a bit too much. On a positive note: Atleast you can't find Döner Kebap and chinese Takeaway like it's custom in Hamburg.

But where is decorum when you need it? In France, it didn't even take more than 3 perhaps 5 seconds for a man to offer his help when putting my luggage up on the luggage rack. In Denmark and Germany though, you will find acceptionally many cases of women, who will get smashed by their "I cannot decide on anything and thus brought something for every eventuality - even though I'm only staying for two nights" luggage.

On top of that, am I okay with listening to my neighbors music? No. I'm busy trying not to hear the screaming, about three months old baby that complains and has all the rights to do so.

But of course, there's always good experiences: 4 1/2 hours with a family from India, whose singing talent could be seen as competition to all the Bollywood movies. And I feel like I am part of a movie. Whether or not there'll be a happy end - I cannot tell. I felt like in a trance of "Why me?"- mantras and the realisation that sometimes it can be difficult to live up to the motto "Live and let live".

-

My idea used to be that I would post impressions and thoughts on a regular basis, but as you can see, it didn't happen.

That raises the question: Did I stop writing, because I had no time? No. My personal "writer's block" came as a surprise, because there was more than enough time, but I lacked motivation. And motivation is one of the first things one risks to lack as an expat.

For even if one does not face bigger problems at first, it wont take too long before one encounters the first problem. It's crucial to start every day life upon arrival - instead of trying to figure out how to function in the new surroundings. If you want to get used to life in another country, all you get used to is the comfort of not having to do a lot and enjoying your free time.

Luckily, my first problem never fully developed into a bigger one, as I started going to Danish class relatively early. Now I'm studying towards the "Studieprøven", the last class that is supposed to determine whether or not I'm fit to study in Danish, and I think I am.

I've also dipped into the Danish business world. I've translated adverts from Danish to German and English. One word combination I bumped into that I remember, because it seems to follow me around everywhere I go, was "added value".

But what does "added value" mean to me? The fact that I earned a bit of money that I don't need to pay tax for? No. My sense of added value is that I felt welcome in the business I worked at. Because feeling "welcome" is difficult and does not come naturally in Denmark. Friends from school are often talking about how difficult it is to find friends and let alone work in Denmark. Well, admittedly, finding friends is not my biggest issue since I simply "inherited" the friends of my boyfriend, but every other friend I found is a foreigner and not a Dane. I guess we all feel so connected since we have to cope with the same difficulties.

Finding work though, is a matter of pure luck, but also a matter of knowledge and skill. The business market in Denmark seems to be more difficult, perhaps more competitive than Germany's, where you can use internships to your advantage and where it seems like a Bachelor would technically be enough. But who knows, maybe someday I'll be able to find my niche?

Soon it's time to say Goodbye Germany - when I'll move to Denmark. Almost three years of constant travels between Germany and Denmark will be over and Frederik and I will finally live together.

Our apartment is located in Aarhus, in the University area. It's 44m² in size which is just a tad smaller than my former apartment and I still haven't managed to learn Danish properly. However, moving does not scare me as I have an idea about all the things that are necessary to remember. I'm looking forward to adventurous times and perhaps even trying out new jobs which i haven't been in touch with, yet.

There will also be a shopping center right across the street, which is pretty convenient and apart from that, we don't know a whole lot about the apartment just yet as we haven't seen it from inside. This feels a bit like a lottery- but we already placed some bets on the bathroom being darkbrown and I also believe that the kitchen could probably be in some kinda wooden color. We are definitely in for a big surprise!

Until then, I'll have to pack. I alreay started and I am overwhelmed by the amount of little things I seem to have been hiding all over my apartment.Beccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13453514964692611322noreply@blogger.com0
